Have you ever had a situation when, after listening to some emotionally intense speech, watching some inspiring video, movie or reading some motivational statement, on the one hand, you light up, get energy, and on the other, you are disappointed that half of your life has gone nowhere?
That you could have done a lot already, but some unnecessary abstract things did not allow you to fulfil yourself… And then the thought comes about the lack of talent or its omission.
In fact, the debate about whether there is any potential is inherent in a person from birth, whether everyone is talented or whether it is a "kiss of God in the temple" of the chosen ones has been going on for a very long time, but most of the opinions boil down to the fact that a significant part of people are gifted with talents in various fields. Why, then, in the course of history, talented people appeared as rare flashes in a clear sky?
What Is Talent And What Is It Like?
The word "talent" comes from the Greek system of measures, where this word denoted the highest weight unit. Also, the historical roots of this word are associated with the New Testament, which contains a parable about three slaves who received silver by talent. The morale of the parable is in how they used it: one buried it in the ground, the second exchanged it, and the third multiplied it. Obviously, the third one was the wisest.
Now we don't have to talk about talent as a unit of weight. Talent is a high level of development of abilities that a person possesses. It allows you to successfully, in a non-standard way, perform a particular task and achieve a highly positive result. Note that this definition includes the word "ability" as well as its "development", and these are undoubtedly the components of talent.
Generally speaking, psychologists distinguish seven types of talent:
- Digital (showing interest in mathematical calculations, programming , technology);
- Physical (activities that require physical effort such as sports);
- Verbal-linguistic (from an early age, such people collect, analyze and present information well, begin to speak and write at a relatively early age);
- Spatial (ability for abstract and figurative thinking, craving for drawing , design);
- A sense of the environment (a tendency to study the surrounding space, biology, botany, etc.);
- Personal or emotional (the ability to feel emotions, convey them, use emotions more than reason);
- Interpersonal (excellent communication skills, negotiation, bargaining, debate).
Think about what talent is present in you. Surely there will be something interesting. But in any case, before you learn how to find and develop your talent, it is worth understanding what circumstances stand in the way of achieving these goals .
What Hinders The Search And Development Of Talent
There can be several obstacles that prevent a person from finding and revealing his talent to the fullest:
Following External Conditions
It seems to us that the need to earn money dictates the choice of certain areas that will bring big dividends in the future. However, consider: what material benefits can be compared with your high spirits, satisfaction from the work you are doing, satisfaction from life in general?
Laziness
Perhaps the most common reason. Procrastination , building hopes for the future, the lack of real results of labor in the present, this is what buries talent in the ground.
Monotonous Life
“A talented person is talented in everything,” says folk wisdom. Often people disagree with this, but the fact is that the more you learn and the more you are interested in life, the more likely you are to reach your potential. It is impossible to understand what you are attracted to, being involved in only one or two areas of activity.
Habit
We get used to routine, to mediocrity. It becomes uncomfortable to leave the comfort zone , and “there is no time for this”... But if you change your attitude to life a little, change your habits, something exciting will come out!
Naturally, these are not all the reasons why people have no idea about their talent. However, these things should be focused on first of all. And only after analyzing your life for their presence, you can talk about specific tips that will help you find talent in yourself and develop it.
How To Find And Develop Your Talent
Here we want to offer a little more advice, because it is the question of finding and developing talent that is of decisive importance for us.
We Listen To Ourselves
Each person has memories of childhood, of some significant events, of habits and pleasant activities. Try to refresh your memory of what specifically attracted the little you.
Maybe you looked at the animals in the zoo with surprise and liked to feed stray dogs and cats (then a veterinarian, dog handler or owner of an animal shelter is hidden in you). You may have enjoyed keeping journals and interacting with invisible students, scolding or encouraging them (obviously you are a natural teacher ). Or you had patterns for dolls, dresses and blouses for toys (wake up your couturier). In general, dig into the halls of memory, and you will definitely find something special.
Conducting A Social Survey
Ask your friends, relatives, acquaintances what kind of activity they associate with you, what features they have noticed in you. You can ask directly: “Do you think I have any talent? And what is he in? Sometimes appraisers from the outside throw up ideas, as if they help you opening your eyes, and it’s already easier for you to understand yourself, to figure out what is yours and what is not.
But be careful. After all, so many people means so many opinions. Someone may not know you well enough, someone may envy you , etc. Therefore, choose a proven competent opinion of a caring person.
Time For A Serious Question
And this question sounds like this: “What would I do if I didn’t have to make money?” or “What brings me real pleasure without regard to material aspects?” The answers to these questions will help you get to know your passions better, understand what really attracts you.
Maybe you have always dreamed of painting, but because of the prevailing opinion that artists mostly live in poverty, you stopped. Who knows, maybe it gives you pleasure to monitor the exchange rate of currencies, but the thought that it is difficult and you need to learn a lot stopped you. Try to realize the source of true pleasure. It is probably in this area that your talent is hidden.
Create An Atmosphere Of Creativity
Surround yourself with interesting people, communicate with them on various topics, expand the horizons of your consciousness through useful communications . Don't spend all your time at work. Enjoy life through nice people who are not alien to creativity. This category of people will allow you to evaluate life from other angles, to see in yourself something that you, for some reason, did not notice before.
Business For Hobby
Of course, communication with creative circles will be beneficial, but let's think, why would creative people waste time on you? Until you yourself have something enticing, until you become a part of this very creativity, art, etc., others may not be particularly interested in you. So take up new hobbies !
Ever dreamed of taking a clay modeling course? Go for it! Interested in becoming a mountaineering instructor? Sign up for relevant courses. Enjoying cello sounds? Why don't you learn this skill yourself?! Life is so multifaceted, so interesting ... You will definitely find what you like . And here the risk is high that you will find your hidden talents. Increase your chances!
Pay Attention To Other People's Experiences
Read inspiring biographies , stories, learn more about the people around you, especially those who have achieved success or are actively moving towards it. When reading any stories or examples, analyze how a person achieved what was expected of him as a result. As a rule, from any story you can always learn something new, practically applicable, worthwhile.
And the last. Perhaps the most important.
Believe In Yourself
Without faith in your own strengths and capabilities in this matter, you are not going to achieve anything. If you are hopelessly disappointed in yourself , if you tend to give up at the first failure or mistake, forget about revealing your talent. Only a person who firmly believes in his success is able to really achieve it.
For example, you have decided on a direction, you are terribly drawn to learning languages. Set a specific goal (say, passing an international exam), build a schedule for achieving it, set deadlines, choose a methodology, and get started. Believe in yourself every day, do not lose inspiration. Of course, do not over do it, otherwise this business will only cause a flurry of negative emotions, know how to relax. But remember: only a person who works hard on himself can achieve the desired result.
In Conclusion
Talent is like a beacon that illuminates our existence, because the work in which we are talented will always bring pleasure and true joy . Unfortunately, life circumstances sometimes force us to turn away from this light, but, what is even worse, over time, it can die out on its own. So remember, you can always rekindle that fire. The main thing is to be able to see it. Then it will warm your existence and illuminate the paths of life.
We wish you good luck!
And as always...
...many thanks for reading!
